Restoration work at Merchant Adventurers’ Hall - March 2016

Following the Christmas flooding, we were appointed to help with the repair work to the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall and several shop units on Fossgate.

Both the Merchant Adventurer’s Hall and shops needed extensive re-plastering, re-fitting and re-decorating.

The necessary repair work needed ranged from drainage investigation to historic pointing of interior and exterior walls with some heritage masonry and heritage joinery.
It was also necessary to entirely rebuild a brick floor that had started to crumble having been underwater for so long.

We are pleased to see the Merchant Adventurer’s hall back to its finest and have taken great pride in being able to restore one of York’s most iconic buildings despite the difficult circumstances.

Captain Stephen Upright RN, Clerk to the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York said:

“The complexity of the damage done to the Hall meant we needed to appoint a company that had the expertise and resources available to carry out the specialist work on the Hall as well as the more general work on the shop units. GEM have come up trumps! They have been able to carry out some incredibly skilful work and have been very easy to deal with on what has been a very difficult project.”
